10 Things not to do when arranging a self-storage unit

There are endless tips when it comes to putting your belongings into storage, but it’s just as easy to make some obvious mistakes. Here are a few examples of things NOT to do when arranging a self-storage unit.

  • Don’t over pack your boxes

Making the best use of your space is a great idea when putting things into boxes, but you still need to be able to lift them. So don’t over pack your boxes, if you’ve only half filled them, be sensible about what else to put in.

  • Don’t leave heavy items until last

You’ve taken everything out of the kitchen cupboards, and started putting your items into storage. Great start, but then you still have the washing machine, fridge, freezer and dishwasher left to go. It’s always a good idea to plan ahead when arranging a self-storage unit. It makes far more sense to put those heavy, bulky items in first.

  • Never underestimate how much space you need

It could even be as simple as putting a classic car in storage. You know how big it is, but what if you forget about leaving room to open the doors, how are you going to get in and out!

  • You shouldn’t pack clothes in cardboard or plastic

It’s fine if you’re moving home, but not when storing clothes in a self-storage unit. Plastic can hold moisture, causing clothes to go mouldy, while cardboard can attract unwanted moths.

  • Don’t put any perishable goods in self-storage units

For example food items that will go out of date. Even if you’re only storing items short term, uStore-it are always available if you have any questions.

  • Don’t keep important items at the back

Quick access to your self-storage unit gives you freedom to store anything you need. However, if you’ve buried that important item under a pile of boxes, the convenience is wasted!

  • Never throw away important documents

If you’re running a business, there are certain documents that are required to be kept long-term. uStore-it cater for storage units of all sizes, even down to space for those endless boxes of invoices.

  • Don’t forget what you’ve put into self-storage

It’s always a good idea to keep track of what you’re storing. Whether it be labelling your boxes, or keeping an itinerary for a later date.

  • Don’t lose your padlock number

Even if you’ve chosen your padlock number yourself, can you remember if it was a birthday or your pin number? Keep it written somewhere safe, but never somewhere obvious.

  • Don’t hire more than you can afford!

Storage unit prices in the Costa-del-Sol vary, but with uStore-it prices are available according to the size of the unit. However, if you’re concerned about keeping up with the bills, customer services at uStore-it in Spain are available to help with any advice.
